Die Abhandlung bildet eine Art Fortsetzung zu seinem Hauptwerk über den Ursprung der Arten und enthält reichhaltiges neues Beweismaterial zur Evolutionstheorie. "This is really two works. The first demolished the theory that the universe was created for Man, while in the second Darwin presented a mass of evidence in support to his earlier hypothesis regarding sexual selections" (Garrison/M.). - "The word 'evolution' occurs, for the first time in any of Darwin's works, on page 2 of the first volume of the first edition, that is to say before its appearance in the sixth edition of The origin of species in the following year" (Freeman S. 129). - Erster Druck der ersten Ausgabe mit den bei Freeman genannten Merkmalen.

Randläsuren. Einbände leicht berieben, Kapitale restauriert, Bezug von Bd. II etw. wellig. Insgesamt schönes Exemplar. - PROVENIENZ: Aus der Bibliothek von Theodosius Dobzhansky (1900-1975), Genetiker und Evolutionsbiologe, zuletzt Professor an der Rockefeller University, New York, mit seinem Stempel auf den Titelbll.; mit hs. Schenkungsvermerk in Französisch des späteren Besitzers, der die beiden Bände von "Doby" 1973 in Davis, Kalifornien, erhalten hatte, wo Dobzhansky ab 1971 als Professor emeritus lehrte.

First edition, first issue. Copy of Th. Dobzhansky. Famous work about the origin of man, in which occurs, for the first time in any of Darwin's works, the word "evolution". 2 vols. With 76 wood engravings in text. Green orig. cloth with gilt spine. - Advert leaves somewhat foxed, both first blanks with cut-out corner, inner hinges carefully repaired, flying endpapers with marginal defects. Bindings slightly rubbed, extremeties of spine restored, cloth covering of vol. II slightly wavy. Overall good copy. - From the library of Theodosius Dobzhansky (1900-1975), geneticist and evolutionary biologist, with his stamp on title pages; first blank with a donation note in French by a later owner, who received the 2 vols. from "Doby" in Davis, California, in 1973.(R)
