Erste Ausgabe des ersten Drucktypen-Musterbuchs der Vatikanischen Druckerei, sehr selten. Enthält 67 Typen europäischer und orientalischer Sprachen sowie Musiknoten.

"The Indice is among the most interesting 'specimens' in the history of printing, and shows the material of a seventeenth century Italian printing office at its simplest and best." (Updike) - Papst Sixtus V. gründete 1587 die Vatikanische Druckerei, in ihr sollten korrekte Bibeln, Werke der Kirchenväter und liturgische Schriften in Latein, Griechisch, Hebräisch und Syrisch hergestellt und vertrieben werden. 1590 wurde Aldus Manutius der Jüngere (1547-1597) nach Rom berufen, um die vatikanische Druckerei zu leiten.
