This drawing is a preliminary work for the painting "Vult und Walt" (Vogt 1934/1). The title hints at the two antagonists, two brothers, in Jean Paul's novel "Flegeljahre". Heckel used the familiar scenery of the beach and the cliffs of Osterholz on the Flensburg Bay as setting. [EH].
