Zum 70. Geburtstag Karl Mucks im Jahr 1931 beauftragte der Hamburger Senat Rolf Nesch mit der Radierfolge Karl Muck und sein Orchester. Die Radierfolge für den Dirigenten der Hamburger Philharmonie zeigt in beispielhafter Weise die experimentelle Verwendung der Drucktechniken bei Rolf Nesch. Das vorliegende Blatt Karl Muck zeigt den Dirigenten ganz nah und eindringlich. Aus dem Dunkel treten Kopf und Hände mit Tacktstock unmittelbar hervor und lassen Muck bei der Arbeit ganz nah und greifbar erscheinen.
"Was Nesch vom Bildnis des Dirigenten mit dem Taktstock sagte, gilt für die gesamte Folge: 'Eine Vision, die geladen ist mit Musik', eine Vision, die aus Dunkelheiten aufleuchtet und die ohne das Erlebnis des Zuhörens nicht zu erklären ist" (H. Spielmann, zit. nach: Rolf Nesch. 1893-1975. Retrospektive zum 100. Geburtstag, Ausst.-Kat. Cismar/Esslingen/Heidenheim, Schleswig 1993, S. 11). - Weitere Abzüge befinden sich in der Sammlung der Hamburger Kunsthalle, des British Museums, London und des National Museums, Oslo.
- ZUSTAND: Guter Gesamteindruck. Im Rand mit druckbedingten Farb-, Quetsch- und Bereibungsspuren. Rechter Rand mit drei geschlossenen Einrissen, davon einer ca. 1 cm und der andere ca. 8 cm in die Darstellung hineinreichend, sowie mit vereinzelten kleinen Löchlein. Rechts mit einer diagonalen Knickspur, dort mit oberflächlichen Farbverlusten im Schwarz. - PROVENIENZ: Privatsammlung. - Galerie Nierendorf, Berlin (1979 vom Vorgenannten erworben. Verso mit dem handschriftlichen Besitzvermerk). - Privatsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen.

Orig. drypoint with plate tone, signed and inscribed "Selbstdruck". Hand-made proof before the small unnumbered edition for the portfolio of presumably less than 9 copies. On fine paper. From the series "Karl Muck und sein Orchester". - Good overall impression. In the margin with traces of paint, squeezing and rubbing caused by printing. Right edge with 3 closed tears (1 approx. 1 cm and the other approx. 8 cm extending into the image), with isolated small holes. On the right with a diagonal crease, there with loss of color in the black surface. - Private collection. Galerie Nierendorf, Berlin (acquired from the above in 1979.
