Goethe's poems were published by Paul Cassirer with four series of illustrations, that is with graphics by Barlach, Liebermann, Meid and Walser; an "ungemein kühnes und extravagantes verlegerisches Unternehmen, das in der Geschichte der deutschen Buchillustration beispiellose Bedeutung - und bis heute keine Nachfolge erlangt hat ... An keinem von seinen Illustrationswerken kann man Barlachs Auffassung vom Illustrieren, seine positiven und seine negative Eigenschaften so gründlich studieren und kennenlernen wie an diesen Lithographien zu Goethes Gedichten. Sie sind ungleich, in der graphischen Qualität, in der Erfindung, im Grad, wie sie auf das Gedicht eingehen oder an seinem Sinn vorbeiziehen, wie sie einmal ein nebensächliches Detail akzentuieren, ein andermal das Ungesagte darstellen, das zwischen den Zeilen steht. Sie enthalten, wenn man versuchen wollte, dieses Ungleichartige auf eine Formel zu bringen, wenig von Goethe und alles von Barlach ..." The case somewhat bowed and shop-soiled.
