Berühmte Kosmographie

Zacharias Lilius
Orbis breviarium. Florenz, Antonio Miscomini, 5. VI. 1493.

"The object of this curious and learned geographical work, originally written just before the discovery of the new Continent, seems to have been to post up into one little book all the knowledge and all the ignorance respecting our globe that could be collected from the ancients, as well as mediaeval writers, so as to start fair with the new light to be let in by Columbus. It is a sort of alphabetical dictionary of geography, with a good index. The works of Lilius are in Ortelius' famous list of geographical authorities pulished in 1570" (Sabin).

Innengelenk leicht eingerissen, insges. guterhaltenes Exemplar.
LITERATUR: Hain/Cop. 10101. - GW M 18351. - Goff L 218. - BMC VI, 642. - BSB L-176. - Klebs 607.1. - Kristeller 237. - Nordenskiöld III, 975. - Tooley, Mapmakers III, 136. - LGK II, 812 (mit Abb.). - Vgl. Sabin 41068.

First edition of the cosmography of Zaccaria Lilio which remained a popular manual of geography and cosmography for a long time. With 1 broad woodcut border, 2 almost fullpage woodcut maps (schematic world maps - a zonal map and a wheel map) printed in black and red, last page with woodcut printer's device. 19th century vellum with modern calf label on spine. - Some minor foxing, some old marginal annotations (partly cropped), front inner joint slightly loosened. Altogether good copy.(R)
