Lot description
William Shakespeare
The Tempest. Monte-Carlo, A. Sauret 1975.

"In 1974, Raymond Levy, who runs the French publishing house Editions André Sauret, asked Chagall if he would consent to illustrate Shakespeare's famous comedy The Tempest . Such a delightful combination of poetry, fantasy and mythology was an obvious choice for the Russian artist, especially as he was familiar with Shakespeare's text. However, because of his strong admiration for the British poet and because he was afraid he might fail to serve him, he hesitated a long time before accepting the proposition .. Owing to the fact he had so much research material, he decided not to do any preliminary studies. Between March and May 1975, the artist produced fifty drawings on tracing paper. They were transferred onto zinc plates in Mourlot's atelier in Paris. After the first trial proofs had been pulled, the plates were sent back to Saint-Paul-de-Vence so that Chagall could retouch his work." (Sorlier S. 17f.) (Mourlot V, 111).
