Vierte lateinische Ausgabe, erstmals 1570 mit 53 Karten erschienen. Der Atlas enthält die Weltkarte in Oval, 4 Erdteilkarten, 59 Karten der europäischen Länder (mit England, Wales, Schottland, Irland, Spanien, Portugal, Frankreich), 17 Deutschlandkarten (mit Teilkarten von Niedersachsen, Dithmarschen, Mansfeld, Bayern, Franken, Sachsen, Pommern, Schwarzwald, Schwaben) und 10 Karten zu Asien (Ostasien, Indien, Vorderorient) und Nordafrika. Die Karten wurden überwiegend von Frans Hogenberg gestochen und sind meist verziert mit Rollwerkkartuschen, Segelschiffen und Seeungeheuern, die exotischen Länder und Gegenden dabei oft angereichert mit einheimischen Bewohnern und Tieren.
EINBAND: Flexibler Pergamentband um 1900. 41,5 : 28 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit koloriertem Kupfertitel und 70 kolorierten Kupferkarten. - KOLLATION: 10 nn. (inkl. Titel), 70 num., 48 nn. Bll. - ZUSTAND: Fachgerecht gereinigtes Exemplar, wenige minim. restaurierte oder geklebte Randeinrisse, Titel am Falz, 12 Karten und 3 Bll. Index tls. angerändert (Illustrationen bzw. Text nicht betroffen). - PROVENIENZ: Gestochenes Wappenexlibris (sign. C. Helard 1901) des Bürgermeisters von Liverpool: William Henry Watts sen. (1825-1924).

Complete, old colored copy, one of the earliest editions of the important map series, as the first "modern" atlas, it sets standards for all subsequent ones. Clean copy of the fourth Latin edition of Ortelius' epochmaking atlas, containing illustr. engr. title and 70 doublepage engr. maps. - Very carefully cleaned copy, a few minim. restored or glued edge tears, title in the gutter, 12 maps and 3 index leaves partly remargined (not affecting illustrations or text). Engr. coat of arms bookplate (signed C. Helard 1901) of the mayor of Liverpool: William Henry Watts senior (1825-1924).
