.My dear Walde, I was at the artist's house and I was delighted by your pictures. You really did me some credit, as I recommended you to the lousy and ingrate Viennese artist mob. I warmly recommended you to each and everyone of them and wired from Innsbruck and Kitzbühel, and now I am full of joy, as your pictures beat all others. [..] You are on the right track. You are great, my friend.

Alfons Walde staged the Alpine landscape near Kitzbühel like no one else did, the observer is immediately taken by his passion and love for the snow-covered world. The glistening sunlight casts long and dark shadows on the snow. A perfect winter's day gets the villagers out of their homes for a chat with their neighbors. The dominant pictorial elements in Walde‘s composition are the sky‘s bright blue and the dazzling whiteness of the snow masses. Walde is a master of the depiction of this idyllic landscape, eventually his light-flooded winter landscapes made him famous during his lifetime. The surface‘s summary conception, which he breaks up and invigorates with a skilled brushwork and strong contrasts of light and shade, is document of his artistic progressiveness in context of a figurative painting that made him one of the most outstanding representatives of Alpine folk painting.[SM]
