‘Jede Nacht besucht uns ein Traum’ [‘Every Night A Dream Visits Us’] – this title of a Kubin drawing forms the subtext of many of his works. Our drawing is informed by a blend of fascination and disturbance growing out of what seems to be the documentary reproduction of the object depicted and its obviously alien nature. ‘I consistently rejected all recollection of nature as an organised given and formed compositions of bundled veils and rays, of cristalline or shell-like fragments, of flaps of skin and flesh, of foliate ornaments and thousands of other things.’ (Kubin, in: Hans Bisanz, A. Kubin. Zeichner, Schriftsteller, Philosoph, Munich/Salzburg 1977, pp. 18f.). [KD].
