With 3 woodcut title borders in four parts , over 250 woodcuts in the text (some rep.) and 1 woodcut printer's devcie (of 2) at the end. Mainz, J. Schöffer 1541. Contemp. vellum over wooden boards, with label and with rich blind- and roll tooling. Small folio. 14 unnumb., 448 Roman numb. ll. (of CCCCL, recte 449 numb. ll.), 1 blank, 93 Roman, 1 unnumb. ll.

VD 16, L 2109. - Goedeke II, 320, 8. - Schweiger I, 545 (erroneously Göttingen). - Not in BM STC and in Adams. - Fifth German edition, executed by N. F. Carbach, with the books of the fifth decade found in Lorsch, which were first released in 1533. Edited by I. Wittich, J. Micyllus and Bernh. Schöfferlin. The woodcuts date back to earlier Schöffer editions, they have been ascribed to the painter Conrad Faber of Kreuznach, who is regarded a master of landscape painting. - Lacking title sheet replaced in red and black by an old hand, without sheet CLIII (with one woodcut on verso). - Somewhat foxed, cropped close to the image in side margin, first text l. remargined and with rebacked marginal splits (minimal loss of printed matter replaced by an old hand), last l. and rear pastedown with worming in gutter, 4 10 ll. with rebacked marginal blemishes. Clasps removed, upper spine end with small tear. All in all fine copy.
