"The unique position held by Ortelius' Theatrum in the history of cartography is to be attributed primarily to its qualification as 'the world's first regularly produced atlas' ... Shape and contents set the standards for later atlases" (Koeman 1969, III, 29). - 14. latein. Ausgabe, gegenüber den vorhergegangenen Ausgaben um 6 Karten erweitert. Zugleich die erste latein. Ausgabe von Vrients, der die Platten 1601 erworben und 1602 bereits ein 'Theatrum' mit span. Text herausgegeben hatte. "This is the most advanced Latin edition of the Theatrum published by Vrients." (K. 1969, III, 61) - Die schönen Karten, oft eingerahmt von ornamentalen Einfassungslinien, überwieg. ausgestattet mit mehreren Schmuckkartuschen, Wappendarstellungen, figürl. Beiwerk wie Allegorien und Putti, Meilenzeigern, Windrosen, Segelschiffen und Seeungeheuern (v. a. Island), sowie teils mit Nebenkarten oder -ansichten. - Wie üblich im unteren Rand gering bis leicht fingerfleckig, daneben nur wenige Karten gering stock- oder braunfleckig (Island etw. stärker betroffen), ca. 25 Bll. im äußeren oberen Rand schwach wasserrandig (davon 20 Karten, Kartenbild nicht betroffen). Ca. 5 Karten in der Mittelfalte minim. eingerissen, 1 Karte dort mit Einriß von 10 cm, 2 Karten im Rand mit kl. restaur. Fehlstelle bzw. leichter Schabspur, 1 Karte mit Knickspur entlang der Mittelfalte; Titel mit altem Stempel und altem Besitzeintrag; Buchblock gebrochen, Vorsätze alt erneuert, hint. Innengelenk gelockert. Einbd. mit leichten Beschabungen, Rücken an den Kapitalen restauriert, und gering trockenrissig, Schließen entfernt. - Insges. außergewöhnlich wohlerhaltenes, breitrandiges Exemplar auf festem Bütten mit kräftigen Abdrucken der Kupfer.Complete and fine copy of the 14th Latin edition, enlarged by 6 maps, and first Latin edition of the 'Theatrum' at all by Vrients. 2 engr. titles, engr. arms, engr. portrait, engr. epitaph, engr. title vignette and all in all 156 double-page engr.maps resp. plates (151 maps, 3 views and 2 plates with costumes). Contemp. calf over wooden boards, richly gilt stamped, edges gauffered, front board with gilt heraldic supralibros (Danzig). - Lower margins as usual slightly fingerstained, else only few maps with minor foxing and few brown stains (Iceland somewhat stronger affected), about 25 sheets only slightly waterstained in the upper margins (of these only 20 maps, not affecting the illustration). About 5 maps with minim. tear in centrefold, 1 map with a tear of 10 cm, 2 maps in the margin with small restored defective spot resp. with slight abrasion, 1 map with crease near the centrefold; title with old ownership entry and stamp, flying endpapers renewed with old material, inner hinge loosened, inner book split. Binding slightly scraped, extremities of spine with small restorations, spine slightly cracked by dryness, casps removed. - Overall an exceptionally well-preserved copy on firm laid paper with full margins and strong impressions.
