Sheet 4 from portfolio "Die plastische Gestaltung der elektro-mechanischen Schau 'Sieg über die Sonne'". Printed by Leunis&Chapman GmbH, Hanover 1923.

The bold project of putting up the opera by Matyushin into an electro-mechanic show has never been realized. The theatre of total abstraction, in which humans act just as figures within a theatre of technic, had after initial success especially with Meyerhold no sufficient future. What has survived is a series of lithographs of the mechanic figures that El Lissitzky had made for a performance. With all their radicalness they make for the outmost point of a de-theatralized scene. El Lissitzkys series of lithographs "Victory over the Sun" is both highlight and end of a development that strives to encounter an increasingly engineered environment with art by making its formal elements a constant, thus giving them a new meaning.
